TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs or BUMN) Minister Erick Thohir said the target of gender equality in state-owned companies has not been achieved. Previously, he targeted the number of women in the SOE leadership to reach 15 percent in 2021 and 20 percent in 2023.

"The gender equality have only reached 12 percent. Even though some time ago it was said that it was 14 percent. But it's already August, only 4 months left (to end of the year)," said Erick at the BUMN Muda event, Wednesday, August 25.

The proportion of women in leadership ranks is an important part to achieve equality. In addition to increasing the involvement of women, Erick encourages a larger portion of young people or millennials in state-owned companies.

Based on the target, Erick said that 5 percent of SOE leaders must be filled by millennials. Meanwhile, the current achievement is only 4 percent. This achievement does not only apply to state-owned companies, but also at the Ministry of SOEs.

He pointed out that his office is currently has two younger vice ministers. In fact, the SOEs Ministry also chooses deputies who are still working under 40 years of age. The minister went on to say that appointing a company leader is an important milestone for a corporation.

In making policies, Erick Thohir said, a leader must be able to think about whether his decisions are sustainable. He reasoned that the leader has a limit on the leadership period. Therefore, they must also think about the leadership transformation.
