TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Amnesty International Indonesia received reports that many health workers were intimidated for questioning the late distribution of their incentives. Deputy Director Wirya Adiwena explained in several cases, intimidation came from state apparatuses or local governments.

For example, one of the medical workers at the Kemayoran Wisma Atlet COVID-19 Emergency Hospital, Fitri, reported to Amnesty in June 2021 that she was grilled by authorities. She was accused of violating the code of ethics after conducting a survey on incentive payments among healthcare workers and planning to hold a press conference.

According to her, she was interrogated in a room and surrounded by at least 15 military and police personnel.

Besides Fitri, Wirya went on, a volunteer of Lapor Covid-19 with an initial A told Amnesty on June 7, 2021, that members of the civil coalition often received similar threats, particularly when they tried to follow up on reports of late incentive payments to local health agencies.

Amnesty International Indonesia also found that at least 21,424 health workers in 21 provinces were late to receive their incentives and even got a pay cut since June 2020.
