TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The chairperson of the ruling Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), Megawati Soekarnoputri, said she had asked President Joko Widodo or Jokowi to seriously respond to the statement of his United States counterpart Joe Biden.
In his speech on July 27, at the Office of the Director of U.S. National Intelligence, Biden warned that Jakarta is in danger of sinking in the next ten years. The statement instantly became public limelight.
“This is a good warning for Indonesia,” said Mega on Wednesday, August 4.
Megawati claimed she had discussed the issue with Jokowi and Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung. She underlined that the government must immediately seek solutions in response to the statement.
The PDIP chairperson also said she intensively talked about disaster mitigation even though she no longer acted as the leader or the responsible person of the republic.
“That’s why I thought I am like a consultant. I joked with Hasto (PDIP Secretary) that how come I became a consultant but did not get paid. Just to please myself. And because this is my responsibility as a citizen of Indonesia. I don’t want my country to sink,” Megawati said.
