TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) prosecutor demanded former Social Minister Juliari Batubara be sentenced to 16 years in prison for committing corruption in the Covid-19 social assistance. Juliari was also demanded to pay a fine of Rp500 million or a subsidiary jail term of six months.

“We declare that the defendant is legally and convincingly proven guilty,” the KPK prosecutor Ihsan Fernandi read the indictment at the Jakarta Corruption Court on Wednesday, July 28.

In addition to the main sentence, Juliari was sentenced to pay compensation of Rp14.5 million. His political rights to be elected as a public official were also revoked for 4 years after serving the sentence.

Juliari was proven to have received bribes totaling Rp32.2 billion related to the social aid programs. The prosecutor outlined Rp1.28 billion from a businessman Harry Van Sidabukke, Rp1.9 billion from a private party Ardian Iskandar Maddanatja, and the rest Rp29.2 billion from several companies that provided the aid packages.

The KPK prosecutor said Harry and Ardian bribed Juliari Batubara so they would be elected as the procurer of the social assistance packages. The money was delivered through two commitment-making officials of the ministry, Matheus Joko Santoso and Adi Wahyono.
