TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Soekarno-Hatta Airport Class 1 Immigration Office has logged 2,070 Japanese citizens leaving Indonesia in the eight days from July 13 to July 21. However, an immigration official asserts that this may seem to be a mass-exodus but is not.

“They're departure from Indonesia is not an exodus,” said Sam Fernando, the airport’s immigration spokesperson to Tempo on July 22.

According to him, the reason for the thousands of Japanese nationals is due to various reasons such as the pandemic, expired work contract, and more.

Fernando said there were 152 Japanese people arriving in Indonesia during the same period and strongly refutes the rumors suggesting that thousands of Taiwanese had left Indonesia aboard a chartered plane. He said there were only dozens instead of thousands.

The Soekarno-Hatta Airport immigration office also logged 64 departures of Taiwan nationals through the airport since July 13 using regular commercial flights.
