TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Maritime and Investment Affairs Luhut Pandjaitan predicts that Indonesia's COVID-19 infection rates will start slowing down in mid-July or around next week. He said the prediction was based on the incubation period of the virus following the implementation of the community activity restrictions or Emergency PPKM on July 3.

"So if we begin [Emergency PPKM] on the third [of July] I think the most likely is that we will start to see it slowing down by around the 12th," he said in a press conference as posted to the ministry's YouTube account on Monday, July 5.

The government is targeting the Emergency PPKM, in effect from July 3 to 20, will be able to curb daily cases to less than 10,000 infections.

Meanwhile, data from the COVID-19 Task Force showed that new cases continued to reach more than 20,000 per day over the past week.

To curb the hike, Luhut said his ministry has urged hospitals to "convert beds" in order to raise COVID patient bed capacity to 30-40 percent.

Luhut also said that hospitals would start regulating the treatment provided for inpatients, based on the levels of severity or symptoms.
