TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The city government of Surabaya, East Java, is considering setting up the Gelora Bung Tomo Stadium as an isolation center for Covid-19 patients following the dramatic surge in Covid-19 cases.

“This is still being studied by the city government. What is certain is that I and the city government officials will fight hard,” said Surabaya Mayor Eri Cahyadi.

Based on the city’s official page for Covid-19, lawancovid-19.surabaya.go.id, Sunday, June 27, 491 more residents were tested positive for the disease. They were undergoing hospital treatment. The number continued to increase from previously reaching 451 people.

The Mayor added that the city had designated two more buildings in the Hajj Dormitory as the isolation venues with a capacity of around 160-200 people. He acknowledged that many residents were undergoing treatment and quarantine at the dormitory. As of Sunday, there were 480 people being quarantined.

The Surabaya Regional Legislative Council (DPRD) Deputy Chairperson, Reni Astuti, previously urged the city administration to increase the number of available beds in a number of hospitals due to the surge in positive cases.

The Surabaya legislator argued that increasing the number of isolation beds is necessary in order to accommodate the rising number of Covid-19 patients.
