TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale jolted Yogyakarta today at around 05:15 Western Indonesian Time (WIB). Residents went into a panic and rushed out of the house.

In the Covid-19 shelter in the Islam Indonesia University (UII) in Sleman, dozens of patients panicked and left their rooms. Some of them wore face masks, while some did not due to panic.

As soon as the shock ended, they immediately returned to their rooms in the four-story building. “It’s scary, but we are not allowed to go down,” said Ayu, one of the patients in the fourth flood, to Antara via WhatsApp.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) confirmed the 5.3 magnitude quake occurred at 05:15:29 WIB, precisely at 8.56 degrees south latitude and 110.58 degrees east longitude. The agency said the quake had no potential to trigger a tsunami.

The earthquake generated in the sea, 66 kilometers south of Wonosari City, Gunung Kidul Regency, Yogyakarta Special Region. It was at a depth of 61 km.

According to BMKG, the shocks were also felt in Bantul, Gunungkidul, Purworejo, Trenggalek, Tulungagung, Blitar, Nganjuk, Sleman, Yogyakarta, Klaten, Cilacap, Kebumen, Banjarnegara, Malang, and Solo areas.
