TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan threatened to enforce tighter restrictions following the soaring Covid-19 cases in the capital city. He issued a stern warning to all players of the economy and religious activities to comply with the predetermined health protocols.

“I warn all people having activities in Jakarta, whether in the economic, social, cultural, and religious sectors, to comply with all existing regulations. If we are not in this together, Jakarta will enter a critical stage. If it happens, we are forced to enforce tighter restrictions,” said Anies in an assembly for the Covid-19 handling with the Regional Leadership Communication Forum (Forkopimda) in Lapangan Blok S, Sunday, June 13.

He also asked all elements in the forum, especially the regional officials, Metro Police, and Regional Military Command to exercise more active work in ensuring public compliance with the health protocol.

“Make sure the public order in all areas that recently become places for gathering and activities,” said Anies, underlining that all operations must follow existing provisions stipulated in the Gubernatorial Regulation in which the enforcement of the micro-scale community activity restrictions (Micro PPKM) was extended every two weeks.

Anies further urged the public to commit to fighting Covid-19 as it is a long battle. “The virus never gets tired. Make sure we win in this battle against Covid-19 pandemic,” he said.

Jakarta saw a dramatic jump in Covid-19 cases for two weeks after the Eid holiday. The city’s weekly active cases as of June 6 amounted to 11,500, and soared by 50 percent to 17,400 cases last Friday, June 11.

“In the last four days, the number of positive cases increased by 2,000, 2,300, 2,400, and today [June 13] 2,700 cases,” said Anies Baswedan.
