TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The armed criminal group (KKB) reportedly set fire to the control tower of Aminggaru Airport, Ilaga, Puncak Regency, Papua on Thursday, June 3. As a result, the airport was closed temporarily.

The Papuan Police Chief Insp. Gen. Matthias Fakhiri on Friday morning confirmed that the rebel group started a fire at the airport control tower.

Previously, there had been a shootout between the armed group and the Indonesian Air Force’s Special Troops who were tasked with securing the airport. “The shootout occurred on Thursday at around 17:40 WIT (Eastern Indonesian Time),” said Matthias.

In addition to the towers, the KKB also set fire to the airport’s waiting rooms, air transportation housing complex, and one resident’s house. At present, the security forces are still trying to clean up the airport.

Matthius confirmed that there were no casualties in the shooting and burning of various facilities at Aminggaru Ilaga Airport.
