TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - South Sulawesi Education Office Secretary Hery Sumiharto said the face-to-face learning activities in schools still depend on the number of Covid-19 cases and the risk zone of each region.

This is in accordance with the circular of the Acting Governor and the Education Ministerial Decree which allow regional governments to flexibly conduct face-to-face learning under considerations of the Covid-19 trend.

"The school reopening depends on the current development [of Covid-19]. Moreover, there is potential for a surge in cases after Eid al-Fitr,” said Hery in Makassar on Tuesday, May 18.

According to him, the decision to conduct on-site studies must be based on the decision of the local government, including residents, and the area must be classified as a safe zone or at least a yellow zone.

All parties in South Sulawesi have prepared the implementation of face-to-face schools since last January, starting from facilities, infrastructure, dissemination, up to trials. The South Sulawesi Education Office had also conducted back-to-school trials in three schools, namely State Senior High School (SMA) 21, SMA 4, and SMA 2. The implementation was considered safe and effective as neither students nor teachers were infected with Covid-19.

The South Sulawesi Education Office also provided options for students who do not get permission to go to school for face-to-face learning, which is via Zoom service or direct visits.
