TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The government will, reportedly, be opening the placement of Indonesian migrant workers overseas, mainly to Taiwan. Manpower Minister Ida Fauziyah said that her office has received the letter from the Taiwanese Ministry of Labour about the plan.

“If Taiwan’s requirements are met then the Manpower Ministry will soon inform Taiwanese authorities as a basis to reopen the placement of Indonesian migrant workers to Taiwan,” wrote Ida Fauziyah in a statement on May 11.

She explained that the reopening of migrant workers’ placement will only be permitted once Indonesia is able to suppress its statistics on Covid-19 transmissions, and ensured that the number has continued to drop and the policy will soon be realized.

One of the requirements is that Indonesia must record only 5,000 daily cases for seven consecutive days. As per May 9, the Minister said Indonesia’s daily coronavirus cases had dropped to 3,922.

However, she insists that the placement will also consider the Covid-19 situation in the country of placement. The minister ordered stakeholders to prepare to meet the new standard operating procedure for migrant workers’ placement.
