TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan asserted the City Hall would not hold Eid al-Fitr prayers this year. He said the mass annual prayers were not allowed to be held in all office areas in the capital.
“No Eid prayer activity is held in offices. So all are asked to perform prayers at home,” said Anies in a press conference at the City Hall, Central Jakarta, Monday, May 10, 2021.
If the public insists on carrying out prayers outside homes, Anies recommends they be done at the nearest mosques. He demanded residents not to go far to perform prayers.
The appeal was issued in an attempt to prevent cross-regional transmission of coronavirus that caused COVID-19. Thus, mosques will only be visited by local people.
Anies Baswedan also explained that if a person from another district came to an area and then COVID-19 spread occured there, the tracing would be difficult.
The Jakarta Police also suggested the public perform Eid al-Fitr prayers at home to curb COVID-19 transmission.
“If possible, perform Eid prayers at home. That will not reduce the meaning of the prayers themselves,” said the Chief of the Jakarta Police Operations Bureau, Sr. Comr. Marsudianto, at the Jakarta Police HQ on Tuesday, May 4, 2021.
