TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi on Sunday claims the number of passenger traffic in the ports of Merak- Bakauheni drastically dropped by 80-90 percent average during this year’s mass exodus ‘mudik’ season ahead of the Muslim’s Eid al-FItr celebration.

In general the air transport saw 93 percent decline, railway (90 percent), and sea transport also dropped 90 percent.

This follows the government’s introduction of the ‘mudik ban’ which is intended to curb the spread of Covid-19 and prevent another wave of coronavirus crisis. “This means that the ban is working effectively while logistic transportations is stable as usual,” the minister wrote in a statement on May 9.

According to the data from the Transportation Ministry on Saturday, May 8, the passengers leaving from Port of Merak not for the intention to ‘mudik’ amounted to 3,050 people, which is a drastic drop compared to the normal average of 25,000-28,000 daily.

He also claims that the mass exodus restrictions and roadblocks preventing people from traveling to their hometowns were effectively implemented in road transport with a claimed 45 percent drop in traffic volume.
