TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Transportation Agency Head Syafrin Liputo announced that the city government also barred residents from having Eid homecoming or mudik trips within the agglomeration area of Jabodetabek (Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi).

The policy on the Eid al-Fitr exodus ban took effect from May 6 until May 17, 2021.

An agglomeration area is a group of closely connected neighboring regions. “We also ban mudik within agglomeration areas because the government prohibits it,” said Syafrin on Friday, May 7, 2021.

The city administration has established eight checkpoints across the capital. Officers will ask people traveling for Eid homecoming to turn around their vehicles instantly even though their destination is still around the town.

The checkpoints are located in Kalideres, Joglo, Pasar Jumat, Jalan Raya Bogor, Kalimalang, Jalan Cakung-Bekasi, Budi Luhur, and Perintis Kemerdekaan.

Syafrin explained the government previously permitted trips across agglomeration areas for work purposes. However, the government decided to ban local mudik given that people may also visit families and relatives within the area in an attempt to suppress people’s mobility during Eid holidays.

“We still allow people traveling for work,” he added.

According to Syafrin, officers can distinguish between people who travel for work and for Eid al-Fitr mudik through their luggage. “Those who are going to and from work will not bring much luggage," he said.
