TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan said on Wednesday that Indonesia is one of the countries with the largest carbon stocks, with claimed figures reaching 70-80 percent of the global carbon stock.

“The large carbon stocks come from the immense natural wealth from forests, mangrove, with carbon storage valued up to 33 gigatons or 20 percent of the world’s reserves,” said the coordinating minister on the webinar about sustainability on May 5.

The minister claimed that Indonesia’s carbon stock from tropical peatlands have a carbon storage value of 55 gigatons, or according to him, 37 percent of the world’s carbon stock.

He explained that the government is currently searching for effective and efficient solutions to combat the issue of carbon emissions. That include preparing financial resources to mitigate climate change and meet the emission target through carbon trading.

“The carbon trading mechanism has become a solution that is used by a number of countries in reducing greenhouse gasses,” said Luhut Pandjaitan.
