TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An earthquake measuring 5.7 magnitudes on the Richter scale rocked West Halmahera of North Maluku earlier today, May 5, at around 05:59 Western Indonesian Time (WIB).

Based on the official website of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) which was monitored in Jakarta, the quake was centered at 1.53 degrees north latitude and 127.19 degrees east longitude. It was also reported that the quake's depth at 133 kilometers.

The epicenter was in the sea 48 kilometers northwest of West Halmahera. The tremor was felt up to Bitung on a scale of III Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI), Manado III MMI, and Ternate II MMI.

BMKG asked the public to stay alert to possible aftershocks. People were also urged to stay calm because the earthquake had no potential to trigger a tsunami.
