TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) Rear Admiral Muhammad Ali said the military is not able to confirm the length of the evacuation process of the sunken naval submarine KRI Nanggala 402. He cited difficult natural conditions as the main challenge.

“We cannot determine the length of the evacuation since it depends on the geographical condition,” said the admiral on Tuesday, May 4. “As we know, the Bali strait has internal waves as we talked about.”

Ali also added that the evacuation team is operating with extreme caution due to the condition where the submarine lies. In addition, the KRI Nanggala 402 is still carrying active torpedoes. He, therefore, asked for patience from the public and media.

As of the current date, the evacuation team has successfully lifted a small portion of the submarine from the ocean floor at the dangerous depth of 838 meters below the ocean surface due to the extreme pressures.
