House Lawmakers Hold Plenary on Papua Special Autonomy

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The special committee of the House of Representatives (DPR) on the Papua special autonomy held Monday the draft law plenary led by the committee’s chairman Komarudin Watubun.
Watubun said on May 3 there were three aspects that were essential in the special autonomy revision, viz. education, healthcare, and economy.
Despite the special autonomy that has been effective for 20 years, he said, it has not been coordinated well as many regencies and cities in Papua are grappling with poverty.
“Which is why there needs to be changes to Law No.21/2001 as it has been changed to Law No.35/2008 that is now included in the DPR's national legislation program of 2021,” Komarudin said in his opening speech at the plenary.
He explained the changes to several Articles in the revised Law No.21/2001 would only involve budgeting and regional expansion as the revision was the initiative of the central government.
Moreover, West Papua Governor Dominggus Mandacan expressed hopes that the results of the plenary could be fought for.
“I personally hope the meeting with the DPR's special autonomy committee can accommodate every input from the local community for the sake of progress and welfare of the Papuan indegenious people,” said the governor.
