TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Mahfud Md asserted that the government would not revoke the Electronic Information and Transactions (ITE) Law. However, a number of changes will be made based on the study results conducted by the government.

“The ITE Law is still needed to anticipate and regulate, not judge, the digital world. It is still very much needed. So the law will not be revoked,” said Mahfud in a press conference on Thursday, April 29.

Mahfud said many countries are improving their regulations concerning ITE. At present, many people use the digital world in malicious ways so that such policy remains fundamental.

The discourse on the revision of the ITE Law brought up after President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo said it should be corrected to prevent multiple interpretations and even misusage. Thus, a technical guideline will be drafted.

Mahfud added that the guideline will be stipulated through a joint decree (SKB) of three state institutions, namely the Communication and Information (Kominfo) Ministry, the Attorney General's Office (AGO), and the Chief of Police.

“The Kominfo Minister said it would be formed into a book. A smart book for journalists, the public, the police, and the Attorney General,” he explained.

There will also be semantic revisions and additional articles in the ITE Law, Mahfud Md added. However, he stopped short of detailing which articles will be amended and what contents in new articles.
