TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Transportation Ministry (Kemenhub) on Wednesday said that it pledges to assist the police investigation against so-called ‘mafia’ practices that help people escape quarantine, which is a requirement for Indonesians and Indians who arrived in flights originating from India.

They believe that these mafia people receive money from people who evade Indonesia’s 14-day quarantine for visitors from India through Soekarno-Hatta Airport.

“The airport authority which is part of the air transport directorate general is ready to cooperate to smoothen the investigation,” said the Ministry’s air transportation director general Novie Riyanto in a statement on Wednesday, April 28.

The Indonesian government is currently requiring a 14-day quarantine for Indian nationals and Indonesians coming home from India to prevent a further spread of Covid-19 after India is currently experiencing a case surge due to a new coronavirus strain.

Moreover according to Novie, the Soekarno-Hatta Airport initially had predicted such mafia practices would emerge and is the reason the Transportation Ministry implemented Regulation No. PM 33/2015 on access control in airports.
