TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Health Ministry’s spokesperson for Covid-19, Siti Nadia Tarmizi, said the ministry’s Research and Development Agency was still identifying mutated SARS-CoV-2 or coronavirus variants that were potentially brought by travelers from India intensively.

“We are conducting whole-genome sequencing of a number of Indian citizens who have tested positive for Covid-19. The result will come next Friday,” said Siti via a text message on Tuesday morning, April 27.

The whole-genome sequencing was carried out by the R&D Agency in collaboration with 17 laboratories in the country. The Health Ministry confirmed that 12 of 127 Indian nationals who exodus to Indonesia last Wednesday tested positive for Covid-19.

According to Siti, a number of related parties are preparing to anticipate the entry of new coronavirus variants from several countries, including B117 from the United Kingdom, B1351 from South Africa, P1 from Brazil, and the double mutation variant B1617 from India which is reportedly more dangerous and infectious.

Siti went on to say that this condition raised concerns about a surge in global Covid-19 cases and pushed the government to be more aggressive in anticipating possible issues in the future.
