TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) deputy chairman for transportation affairs Carmelita Hartoto said her side asked the government to review the 2021 Eid homecoming ban. The policy, she added, could further beat the transportation sector.

According to Carmelita, the transport sector had been hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020.

Statistics Indonesia (BPS) reported that the transportation and warehousing sector contracted 15.04 percent throughout last year. The decline had occurred since the second quarter and continued until the fourth quarter of 2020.

“On that basis, the transportation sector needs the support of all parties to recover quickly and record positive performance again. One of the supports is a review of the homecoming ban.” Carmelita said on Thursday, April 22.

She argued that the ban taking effect on May 6-17 would not necessarily be effective in preventing people from returning to their hometowns.

In order to prevent a spike in Covid-19 cases, she opined, the government could control and tighten the regulations on public transport and private vehicles, such as by carrying out virus tracing or screening.

Carmelita went on to argue that the new addendum on the Covid-19 Task Force Circular No. 13/2021 will not bring a significant impact because people can still travel to their hometown before and after the period of the Eid homecoming ban.
