Jakarta Issues Tree Protection Regulation to Tackle Climate Change

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan has issued Governor’s Regulation No.24/2021 which oversees tree protection and management. The issuance is the city's attempt to overcome the effects of climate change.
Head of the Jakarta Urban Forest and Parks Agency, Suzi Marsitawati, said the regulation aligns with the Jakarta Administration’s commitment to mitigate climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent in 2030.
The regulation hopefully will help the city meet its goal to plant 200,000 trees by 2022 after the tree-planting program was introduced in 2019.
“There are currently 70,880 trees planted which consist of 23,584 trees and 47,296 mangroves,” said Marsitawati on Thursday, April 22.
The government regulation is a byproduct of a carefully-written program in collaboration with the World Resource Institute (WRI) Indonesia. In practice, the City Park agency offers collaboration with the public.
Through this tree protection regulation, the Jakarta administration guarantees victims of fallen trees and provides certainty for violations of illegal tree logging.
