TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Metro Police Traffic Director Sr. Comr. Sambodo Purnomo Yogo said the odd-even policy should be implemented if public transportation capacity is increased.

If the traffic policy is enforced when the passenger capacity of mass transportation mode is still limited, this will have the potential to cause crowds on public transport. “The odd-even policy implementation must be taken under consideration of the addition of public transport capacity,” Sambodo said.

At present, the Jakarta administration still limited the number of passengers in public transport to 50 percent of the total capacity in accordance with the Covid-19 health protocols.

“If it (the policy) is enforced, people will turn from using private vehicles to public transports, while its capacity is still limited to 50 percent,” he added.

Jakarta’s recent traffic has nearly returned to normal as congestion often occurs during rush hours. However, the city administration has not yet enforced the odd-even policy to limit private vehicles.

Sambodo claimed there has not been any discussion with the Jakarta Government regarding the traffic policy thus far.

Jakarta Transportation Agency Head Syafrin Liputo, meanwhile, said the odd-even policy had not been implemented given the high number of Covid-19 cases in the capital so that the capacity of public transport passengers is still limited. Jakarta has scrapped the traffic policy since March 16, 2020, or since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic.
