Sulawesi Hit by M 5.2 Earthquake, Marking the 3rd Time in One Month

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that a magnitude 5.2 earthquake has struck the North Sulawesi region of Bitung on Tuesday midnight with its epicenter located 135 kilometers southwest of the area.

The hypocenter of the earthquake that happened at 22:47 Western Indonesia Time (WIB) was from the depth of 10 kilometers underwater but is expected to not alarm the tsunami warning. However, the BMKG strongly reminds local residents to be mindful of aftershocks.

The earthquake was mildly felt at Bitung, Manado, and Kotamobagu and scaled at Level II which is a weak shock scale.

This marks the third earthquake measuring above magnitude 5 at the richter scale that struck North Sulawesi in April.

A magnitude 5.5 earthquake happened on April 1 at 61 kilometers southwest region of Melonguane while another one happened on April 10 that measured to be a magnitude 6.0 quake striking the Sangihe Islands.
