TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Muhammadiyah on Monday announced that those who are confirmed to carry the Covid-19 virus is not required to be fasting during the holy Muslim month of Ramadan. Fasting is the willful refraining from eating and drinking during the day amid Ramadan.

The chairperson of Muhammadiyah, Haedar Nashir, also said asymptomatic patients are also not required to fast.

“The Ramadan fasting is required except for those who are ill or are experiencing deteriorating immune systems. People confirmed to be Covid-19 positive, either asymptomatic or not are categorized as people experiencing illnesses,” said the chairperson of one of Indonesia’s largest Muslim organization on April 12.

This is mentioned in the official Muhammadiyah circular on practicing the Ramadan. They also gave leeway for healthcare workers from fasting as people in this line of work would need full physical health to conduct their jobs.

He also explains that receiving Covid-19 vaccine shots will not annul a Muslim’s fasting religious guidance states that acts that voids a person’s fast is consuming through the mouth or other body cavities.
