Gorilla Statue at Jatim Park Falls Due to East Java Earthquake

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A seven-meter-high gorilla statue at Jatim Park Malang, East Java, fell down following an earhtquake on Saturday, April 10. The magnitude 6.7 earthquake shook the southern parts of Java Island and highly felt in East Java, Central Java, and Yogyakarta.

Marketing and Public Relation Manager of Jatim Park Grup, Titik S. Ariyanti, said the statue fell at around 14:00 local time, concurrently when the quake hit. “Only the statue that was fall, so far," said Titik. The collapsed statue was located at Batu Secreet Zoo.

She assured no victims in the incident. All of the visitors and staffs of the tourism destination were in a safe condition; noone was injured.

The statue, Titik went on, was a decorative one, not a tourism attraction/ride. Visitors of Jatim Park usually take pictures with the gorilla statue as the background.

Batu City Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) is still identifying the damages due to the earthquake. According to Batu City BPBD data, only the head of the gorilla statue that was collapsed.
