TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Flag-carrier Garuda Indonesia is drawing up strategies following the government’s decision to bar Eid homecoming or mudik from May 6-17, 2021. Garuda CEO Irfan Setiaputra said the firm planned to reduce the frequency of passenger flights.

“Reducing the flight frequency is one of the solutions that are being considered,” said Irfan on Friday, April 9.

The state airline has been thus far permitted to serve 69 domestic routes and 22 international routes. Irfan stopped short of detailing routes that will be suspended during the restriction period.

Besides reducing flights, Garuda is determined to optimize flights transporting goods. “We will mainly focus on cargo flights,” he added.

Garuda Indonesia will immediately disseminate the information to passengers regarding the flight ban for eleven days in May. It will also calculate the potential lower income that may result from the policy. “We are still studying and calculating it,” said Irfan.

The Transportation Ministry prohibited airlines from operating commercial and non-commercial flights, both domestic and international routes, during the ban on Eid homecoming on May 6-17, 2021, except for official travel, emergency trips, or travel with the permission of the Civil Aviation Directorate General.
