TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A number of flights between Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK) and Manado's Sam Ratulangi Airport (MDC) in North Sulawesi have been canceled due to the eruption of Mount Ruang. The eruption also prompted authorities to close the airport in Manado.
M Holik Muardi, senior manager of branch communication & legal at Soekarno-Hatta Airport, said on Wednesday that four flights between Cengkareng and Manado have been canceled. They are Garuda Indonesia flights GA600 (CGK to MDC) and GA607 (MDC to CGK), and Batik Air flights ID6272 (CGK to MDC) and ID6275 (MDC to CGK)
AirNav Indonesia has also issued a NOTAM (Notice to AirMen) regarding the closure of Manado's Sam Ratulangi Airport. The airport closure will last until Thursday, April 18 at 23:59 local time.
"We will provide more updates once there are further developments," AirNav Indonesia operations director Riza Fahmi said in a written statement on Wednesday.
BMKG satellite imagery at 01:30 UTC or 09:30 Central Indonesia Time (WITA) detected the spread of volcanic ash over several areas of North Sulawesi. The results of a paper test by a team at Manado's Sam Ratulangi Airport showed the presence of volcanic ash reaching the surface.
"AirNav Indonesia will continue to work with relevant stakeholders, namely Angkasa Pura I, BMKG and the local airport authority to ensure that flights in Manado and surrounding areas are safe and under control," said Riza.
