TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) chairperson Ahmad Taufan Damanik in a House of Representatives (DPR) hearing on Tuesday praised President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo's stance on human rights issues in the past two years.

Taufan said that Jokowi had gave a clear instruction for the coordination between the Komnas HAM and the Supreme Court in addressing human rights violations.

“In terms of severe human rights violation, the President showed an improvement [of attitude] for the past two years,” said the Komnas HAM chairperson in the House hearing on April 6.

Taufan acknowledged that solving human rights cases in Indonesia’s distant past has been met with several challenges. He asked the government to at least be a facilitator between the human rights watchdog and the Attorney General.

“We also asked the government to have the coordinating minister for politics, law, and human rights to act as the facilitator between Komnas HAM and the Attorney General,” said Taufan. “That is what I conveyed so we would stop the ‘feud’.”

In the hearing, the Komnas HAM chief mostly mentioned more about attempts to solve a number of obstacles that the watchdog faces with government institutions that would enable past human rights violations cases to be solved.

He asserted that collectively finding a solution to a common problem would help and make it possible to solve a number of past human rights violation cases in court.
