BMKG Explains 4 Impacts of Tropical Cyclone Seroja in Indonesia

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Tropical Cyclone Warning Center (TCWC) of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) forecasted that tropical cyclone Seroja will intensify in the next few days. This cyclone will bring four impacts on the weather in the archipelago.

The first impact is the potential for rain with moderate to extreme intensity in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) and East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) and moderate to heavy intensity rainfall in Bali, South Sulawesi, and parts of Southeast Sulawesi.

The rainfall in these five areas will be accompanied by lightning, “as well as strong winds,” as quoted from the BMKG statement on Monday night, April 5, 2021.

The second impact is sea waves with a height of 1.25 to 2.5 meters in the eastern part of Sumba Strait, Sape Strait, Sumbawa Sea, northern waters of Sumbawa to Flores, Wetar Strait, the waters of Sabalana Island to Selayar Island. Then the waters south of Baubau to Wakatobi Island, the western part of the South Banda Sea, and the western part of Arafuru Sea.

Third, the potential for sea waves with a height of 2.5 to 4 meters in the western part of Sumba Strait, the waters south of Flores. Then sea waves with a height of 4 to 6 meters in the southern waters of Sumba Island, Savu Island waters, Savu Sea, Kupang waters to Rote Island.

Fourth, the potential for sea waves with a height of more than 6 meters in the Indian Ocean south of NTT.

BMKG disclosed data on intensifying tropical cyclones in the next few days. On Tuesday, April 6, 2021, its position is about 425 km southwest of Sabu. The maximum wind speed is 60 knots.

Wind speed is predicted to continue to increase until Thursday, April 8, 2021, to 80 knots. However, the agency predicted that the tropical cyclone will move away from the territory of Indonesia in the next few days.
