TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Tangerang regency government will priotitize COVID-19 vaccinations for non-Muslims in the upcoming Ramadan.

The Tangerang regency's COVID-19 handling task force spokesperson Hendra Tarmizi said this decision was taken after considering that Muslims would be fasting during Ramadan.

He said this strategy was based on the fact that fasting drained one's energy and it was deemed better by local health authorities to not add more pressure to those who were fasting. However, he asserted that muslims would still be allowed to get their vaccine shots after breaking their fast later in the evening.

“We will prioritize non-Muslims for the holy Ramadan month vaccination process. We will start vaccinating Muslims after Lebaran [Eid al Fitr],” he said on March 22.

During this vaccination period, the Tangerang administration will focus on establishing a non-muslim vaccination center “because it will be difficult to equally vaccinate Muslims.”

Hendra noted the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) fatwa stated that being injected with vaccine shots did not annul one’s fast.
