TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Muhadjir Effendy said the government planned to provide GeNose, the screening tool to detect Covid-19 using human breath, in movie theaters in a bid to revive the national film industry.

“For the protection in cinema buildings, we will install GeNose. The technical issue will be discussed with Tourism and Creative Economy Minister (Sandiaga Uno),” Muhadjir said in a written statement on Wednesday, March 10, 2021.

Muhadjir hoped the detection tool could guarantee the safety of moviegoers so they would no longer hesitate to visit cinemas and enjoy Indonesian films.

“We hope people can be confident and feel safe to go to cinemas so that the film industry, including actors and film crews, can work more safely and comfortably so that our movie production can run smoothly as before [the Covid-19 pandemic],” he said.

Previously, film industry players including producers and actors met with President Joko Widodo or Jokowi submitting complaints about challenges faced by the industry amid the pandemic. They hoped the government would support the public to return to movie theaters under health protocols.
