TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The major landslide that devastated the rural village in East Java’s Sawaran Kulon village, Lumajang Regency, has reportedly ravaged 13 houses on Sunday, February 28. Fortunately, according to a village local Yanto there were no fatalities reported due to this incident.

“The landslide took place on the early dawn of Sunday at around 02:00 AM (Western Indonesia Time/WIB) and alhamdulillah (Praise to God) there were no casualties,” said Yanto at the local village hall.

All 13 houses that were wrecked were located over the hills and residents managed to flee to safety to higher grounds. He reported that the losses were not only structural but also dozens of livestock that were not able to be evacuated in time. The local ‘Piket Nol’ route was also blocked due to the landslide but was quickly recovered after the government immediately cleaned the roads.

“The losses reached hundreds of millions [of rupiah] due to the destroyed houses and livestock that eventually were buried under the landslide,” Yanto explained.

The Lumajang Administration immediately mobilized and distributed assistance for victims of the landslide which includes food, basic living materials such as blankets, mattresses, clothes, kitchenware, and tarpaulins.
