TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government made various changes in the Borobudur Temple area in Magelang, Central Java.

As quoted from the official website of the Directorate of Settlement Area Development, the largest Buddhist temple in the world was favored by many tourists. There are also several temples near the complex, namely Mendut, Ngawen, Losari, Pawon, and Canggal temples.

On this basis, the government was determined to build more gates to the temple which is located close to several cities such as Yogyakarta, Semarang, Solo, and others. The gates are expected to ease tourists from the mentioned regions to visit the temple.

They are Palbapang Gate, also known as the Lion Gate, which is accessible from Yogyakarta and Solo, Blondo Gate for access from Semarang, Kembanglimus Gate for access from Purworejo, and Klangon Gate for access from Kulonprogo.

The construction of the Kembanglimus Gate, Palpabang, and Blondo had been started since mid-October 2020 as the project contract was signed on October 7 last year.

Besides the iconic gates, the government was keen to provide new experiences for tourists at Borobudur Temple in a bid to boost the number of tourist visits, both domestic and international, given that the tourism sector is one of the hardest hit by the Covid-19 pandemic.
