TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Floods submerged several areas in Jakarta's western suburb of Tangerang on Saturday, prompting thousands of people to shift to higher ground.

The Tangerang City Natural Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) started evacuating residents from their homes to camps early on Saturday.

Floodwaters submerged Ciledung Indah housing complex after Angker River breached its banks, chief of operation and maintenance section of the Tangerang City Public Works and Housing Office, Agus, said.

A joint team of personnel from different institutions is continuing to shift residents to higher ground in anticipation of a rise in water levels, he informed.

The water level in flood-affected areas reached up to 1.5 meters, he added.

Periuk sub-district head Maryono Hasan said his staff is continuing to collect data on the number of flood-hit areas.

The Periuk sub-district office noted the floods have affected five neighborhood associations (RW), with the number of evacuees running into thousands.

As of Saturday afternoon, floodwaters continued to swamp several parts of Tangerang City, with the water level reaching a depth of 30 cm to 1.5 meters.
