Cold Lava Flows from Mount Semeru Today

TEMPO.CO, Lumajang - Cold lava floods from Mount Semeru filled main channels of rivers which upstream located on the slopes of the highest volcano in Java Island on Friday, February 19, 2021, namely Besuk Kobokan and Besuk Sat.

Based on the information received by Tempo, the flow of cold lava was observed on Friday, February 19, 2021, at around 2:00 PM local time. The vibration was recorded in a seismograph at the Semeru Volcano Observation Post (PGA) on Mount Sawur, Sumberwuluh Village, Candipuro District, Lumajang Regency, East Java, with a maximum amplitude of 36 millimeters.

The tremors reached 40 millimeters on Friday afternoon. “But it is starting to decrease,” said the Lumajang Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) Head of the disaster emergency and logistics, M. Wawan Hadi, this Friday evening.

Wawan explained that the cold lava flowed swiftly in the lava control infrastructures that are Besuk Kobokan and Besuk Sat. He added that his side had stationed several officers in the area.

In addition to the cold lava flood, based on the observations of Mount Semeru from 6 a.m. to 12 p.m, there were 20 eruptions with an amplitude of 16-22 millimeters accompanied by earthquakes for 100-125 seconds, one harmonic tremor, and one tectonic quake.
