TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, explained the partnership between Indonesia and Japan on the environment and waste management during an online bilateral meeting with Japanese Minister of Environment, Koizumi Shinjiro, on Thursday.

“The partnership with Japan has been done in the G20 summit in Osaka, Japan, back in 2019. Ever since, we continue to communicate intensively with each other regarding the environment,” said Luhut in a statement on Friday. February 19.

The Indonesian and Japanese governments discussed waste management in general, ocean waste management, the pollution in Indonesia’s Citarum River, and climate change.

Luhut explained that the Presidential Regulation No.83/2018 which involves 16 state ministries shows that Indonesia has followed up the waste issue the two countries had discussed, as the regulation focuses on managing 70 percent sea waste by 2025.

Meanwhile, Minister Koizumi Shinjiro reportedly said he is grateful for the joint waste management effort between Indonesia and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) at Legok Nangka which is effective to overcome sea waste and promote sustainable economy.
