TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo stated he would ask the House of Representatives (DPR) to revise the Information and Electronic Transaction Law or ITE Law. He said the revision was aimed at removing vague articles that potentially cause multiple interpretations.

“If the ITE Law cannot provide a sense of justice, I will ask the DPR to jointly revise this law, because this is upstream,” said the President during a briefing to leaders of the Indonesian Military (TNI) and the National Police on Monday, February 15.

However, he underlined that the law must hold its original spirit. “Of course, we need to keep Indonesia’s digital space to remain clean, healthy, ethical, decent, with manners, and also productive,” the state head added.

He asked the TNI and Police personnel to respect and uphold democracy, as well as provide a sense of justice to the community.

The former governor of Jakarta went on to remark that Indonesia is a democratic country that respects freedom of opinion and organization. It is a constitutional state that must carry out the law as fairly as possible, protect broader interests, and ensure a sense of justice for the people at the same time.

Jokowi further ordered the National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo to be more selective in responding to and accepting reports of violations of the ITE Law. He warned the police to be careful about translating articles that could lead to multiple interpretations.
