TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Banyuwangi Airport located in East Java, which had been closed for nearly a week because of volcanic activity from Mount Raung located in the province’s border, has been reopened for commercial flights on Sunday, February 14.

State-airport operator Angkasa Pura II executive general manager for the Banyuwangi region, Cin Asmoro, explained that the reopening of this airport had also been sounded in the notice to airmen issued by local airport authorities.

“Banyuwangi Airport has been reopened and saw four flights since this morning. As scheduled, the airport will serve six flights,” wrote Asmoro in a statement on Sunday, February 14.

The airport’s reopening is based on the latest situation reported by the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) and AirNav radars and has been announced by the Surabaya Area 3 airport authorities.

“Based on that coordination we finally issued the notice to airmen. The Banyuwangi Airport immediately served three commercial flights,” he said. “We hope this condition continues and volcanic activity from Mount Raung will no longer affect flights in the airport.”
