TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Education and Culture's director-general of PAUD (preschool education), basic education, and middle education, Jumeri, asserts that the recent joint decree (SKB) among three ministers does not ban students to wear hijabs or cross necklaces as their religious identities.

"The joint decree does not forbid students to wear uniforms with religious characteristics among children. It does not ban its uses," said Jumeri in a press conference on Thursday, February 11.

He clarified that what is banned in the decree is rules that require or ban a student from wearing outfits that correspond to the students' religious character.

"So headmasters, school management, or regional administrations are banned from requiring or banning things," said the director-general.

The SKB among 3 state ministries provides broad chances for students to practice their religious beliefs and allow schools to conduct its function to help students achieve it.

The SKB decree was signed by Education and Cultural Affairs Minister Nadiem Makarim, Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian, and Religious Affairs Minister Yaqut Cholil Qoumas.
