TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Muhammadiyah has announced the first day of Muslim’s holy month of Ramadan will fall on Tuesday, April 13, 2021. It was stated in the organizations's latest public notice filed under No.01/MLM/I.0/E/2021.

The organization, which is one of the two largest Islamic organizations in Indonesia, set the date of the 1st of Ramadan 1445H through an astronomical calculation method that able them to establish the Islamic Hijri month.

A contrast from the Indonesian government which uses the manual method known as ru'yatul hilal that involves directly observing the beginning of Ramadan through a physical telescope towards the moon’s ascent at a fixed horizon. They would then establish the first day of Ramadan through a meeting with the Ministry of Religious Affairs.

According to Muhammadiyah’s calculation, on April 12, 2021, the crescent moon would be visible as the moon enters the moment of sunset in Yogyakarta and that all across the nation the moon is already above the horizon. Which means that the following day would mark a new month in the Islamic calendar.

Through this announcement, the Lebaran or Eid al Fitr day will fall on May 13, 2021.
