TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) warned the public to be aware of potential extreme weather for the next week on February 10-16, 2021.

“Most regions are entering the peak of the rainy season, such as southern Sumatra, most of Java including Jakarta, parts of Kalimantan, Bali, Nusa Tenggara, parts of Sulawesi, parts of Maluku, parts of West Papua, and parts of southern Papua,” said the agency’s Deputy for Meteorology, Guswanto, in his statement on Wednesday, February 10.

The agency’s analysis showed that the unstable dynamics of the atmosphere in the next few days could increase the potential growth of rain clouds in several regions of Indonesia. This was due to the center of the low-pressure areas around Australia and the emergence of cyclonic circulation around northern Indonesia which affected the wind direction and speed.

Besides, the strong lability of the atmosphere in parts of Indonesia could significantly influence the growth of rain clouds on a local scale.

Thus, heavy rainfall with lightning or strong winds potentially hit Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Jambi, Bengkulu, South Sumatra, Lampung, Banten for the next week.

West Java, Central Java, Yogyakarta, East Java, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, Central Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, North Kalimantan, Central Sulawesi, South Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi, North Maluku, Maluku, West Papua, and Papua would possibly experience the same weather.

Based on the BMKG's impact-based forecast (IBF) over potential floods or flash floods on February 10-11, Banten, West Java, Central Java, and East Java were considered in the alert status or Siaga.
