TEMPO.CO, Bandung - The Geological Agency of the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG) has spoken up about possible causes of land subsidence at KM 122 of the Cikopo-Palimanan or Cipali toll road in Subang Regency, West Java. They were erosion and heavy downpour.

The PVMBG head Andiani said the erosion caused the land movement. However, the movement in the toll road was relatively slow.

“It was possibly due to the embankment material that is not solid or easily eroded. It is also affected by water erosion as the roadway is located near a large river,” said Andiani in a statement in Bandung, Tuesday, February 10.

On this basis, PVMBG suggested immediate actions to fix the cracks in a bid to prevent further water erosion that might accelerate soil movement.

“Direct the water flow away from the damaged area and reinforce the slopes at the roadside located near the river to suppress the erosion rate, as well as increase the slope stability,” Andiani explained.

The collapse of the KM 122+400 section of the Cipali toll road occurred early Tuesday after heavy rainfall struck West Java regions. The toll road closed the roadway as it was severely damaged. The maintenance work was estimated to take up to two weeks.
