Jakarta City Agency Denies Rumor of Smaller Covid-19 Burial Plots

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Parks and Forestry Agency has disputed the rumor suggesting a reduction in burial plot sizes across the city’s cemetery spaces that are specially prepared for victims of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The agency’s chief, Ivan Murcahyo, asserts that burial plots will remain standard 2.5 by 1.5 square meters. However, he acknowledges that he had heard about the rumor that the Jakarta administration would implement a size reduction to increase burial capacity.
“The standard burial plots are that size and cannot be reduced even the slightest. It wouldn’t fit [bodies] if it were,” said Murcahyo to Antara news on Monday, February 1.
He maintains that the agency is actually committing to the opposite, and will optimize peripheral facilities other than the burial plots itself to increase the capacity of Covid-19 cemeteries. Murcahyo also believes it would not be a viable option to reduce the sizes of burial plots as it would make their work more difficult.
“We could optimize the roads, service areas, and workers’ shelters in cemeteries,” he said.
