TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta administration has permitted the burial of people who passed away due to coronavirus disease outside the special public cemetery reserved for Covid-19 victims.
The management head of Pondok Ranggon cemetery in East Jakarta, Muhaemin, said on Monday, Dec. 28, that the permission was issued since the space of special graves have run out.
According to him, the city government has set several requirements of dead bodies that are allowed to be buried outside Pondok Ranggon cemetery or Tegal Alur cemetery in West Jakarta.
“The crisis of Covid-19 graves have occurred since November 8, 2020. The space is full now,” Muhaemin added.
The cemetery management also implemented overlapping burial graves or stacking bodies alongside or on top of each other in one grave on conditions, he explained.
As the plots began to be full, Muhaemin said that the family could use other public cemeteries that meet the requirements. At present, public cemeteries across five administrative city areas have allowed funerals under Covid-19 procedures.
East Jakarta’s Pondok Ranggon public cemetery has accommodated more than 4,650 bodies of Covid-19 victims in both Muslim and non-Muslim blocks.
