TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - West Java Governor Ridwan Kamil said his provincial government had locked in a supply of breeding cows from West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) following the signing of a partnership between the two regional-owned firms PT Agro Jabar and PT Gerbang NTB Emas on Wednesday, Jan. 27.

“Hopefully West Java will not always rely on imports of cows from Australia, but it can be independent through domestic markets and supplies, especially NTB which is proclaimed as a province of a million cattle,” said Kamil in an online press conference in Garut.

According to him, PT Agro Jabar would receive 1,000 breeding cows for the first phase.

West Java was determined to get a supply of cows from within the country, Kamil informed. “The cows from NTB are not beef cattle so it can be bred. The goal is to produce domestic supply, or from intra-provincial partnerships rather than cross-country trade,” he explained.

The beef demand in West Java exceeded 193,255 tons or equal to 1,017,138 cows every year. During the celebration of Eid al-Adha (Day of Sacrifice), the demand increased by up to 18,000 cows. Most of the needs were supplied from Australia thus far.
