Customs Thwarts Attempted Smuggling of 4 Trucks of Medical Waste from Malaysia

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Customs and Excise officials at the Finance Ministry have thwarted an attempted smuggling of medical waste and arrested seven suspects allegedly from Malaysia. The waste included latex hand gloves and medicines loaded in four trucks and smuggled through Rokan Hilir regency, Riau.

Dumai Customs Office Head Fuad Fauzi said his side also seized various types of illegal drugs. “We carried out the action on Jalan Lintas Sumatera, Bangko Pusako district, Rokan Hilir regency,” he said as quoted from an official statement on Friday, Jan. 22.

The Customs Information Service Center Head, Gatot Kuncoro, explained the operation was conducted on Friday last week, Jan. 25.

Two trucks loaded with 201 boxes of illegal medicines have been handed over to the Pekanbaru Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM).

The other two trucks loaded with 550 sacks of used hand gloves, meanwhile, were being investigated together with the Riau Law Enforcement Team of the Environment and Forestry Ministry.
