Indonesia Extends Covid-19 Restrictions in Java-Bali until February

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia adds two more weeks of restrictions on public activities, known as PPKM, in the Java-Bali area. The second period of the Covid-19 restriction is from January 26 until February 8.
The decision was taken in a closed meeting chaired by President Joko Widodo or Jokowi, today, January 21.
Airlangga Hartarto, chairman of the Covid-19 Response and Economic Recovery Committee (KPC-PEN), said in a press conference on Thursday that the decision was made as new cases of Covid-19 continued to rise in most of Java and Bali. The mortality rate in Indonesia has also increased while recovery rates in several provinces declined.
The government's policy to restrict community activities in Java-Bali has been far from effective. After ten days of its enforcement, community mobilization only decreased by 15-25 percent.
According to the National Covid-19 Task Force, Indonesia's total caseload as of January 20 reached 929,948, of which 9,755 are new patients. On January 15, Indonesia broke its record for daily cases with more than 12,000 new cases reported.
